The voice memos app in 3.0 is pretty neat, but that’s all I thought it was when I first saw it: a cute little gimmick. Oh, what a fancy little microphone and recorder button. How quaint!
But here’s something Apple didn’t really announce (okay, so I guess I just didn’t hear about it): Voice Memos runs in the background just like the Phone app. This means that when you tap on the home button while recording, you’ll see that lovely pulsing red status bar along the top of your screen showing that the app is still going strong.
I really thought I’d be using Evernote’s voice recorder, but the voice quality on Voice Memos combined with the background recording just makes it a clear winner for my use case. Making a set of quick voice notes while viewing a new review application is working out well for me so far. I can tick that off my list now.
Next up, finding a use for the Stocks app…or a way to get rid of it altogether without jailbreaking.
