Hot on the heels of a classic shooter game hitting the App Store (Duke Nukem 3D), we ‘ve also got one of the greatest ever PC strategy games coming to the iPhone “ Sid Meier ‘s Civilization Revolution.
Strategy games are much more up my alley than shooters generally are, and I ‘ve burned up many, many hours playing various (mostly earlier) versions of Civilization “ so this is a game I am very glad to see hit the App Store. I snapped it up with just about zero seconds of hesitation “ especially at a ’48-hour Sale ‘ price of $4.99 (regular price is said to be $9.99).
Here ‘s a little bit of the app ‘s App Store description:
Build. Discover. Conquer. Rule the World! Lead your civilization from the dawn of man to the modern age and beyond in Sid Meier ‘s Civilization Revolution. Go head to head with history ‘s greatest leaders as you wage war, conduct diplomacy, discover new technologies, inspire your nation and build the most powerful empire the world has ever known.
Pretty much just as you know and love Civilization, if you ‘ve ever played it in the past. Here ‘s a bit more that covers some of its features:
LEAD YOUR PEOPLE TO GREATNESS: Choose your victory path: military, cultural, economic or scientific. However you choose to lead your people, there ‘s a way to win. CHOOSE YOUR CIV: Choose from 16 Civilizations throughout history (including America, Spain, China, Japan and Germany) to lead to victory. INTENSE COMBAT: Triple your strength by combining up to three units into one powerful army and destroy your enemies. Level them up through military victories to gain additional strength and new abilities. TOUCH BASED CONTROLS: Completely new interface designed for gesture-based controls. Zoom in with a pinch, move your units with a drag and scroll across the map with a flick. ACCESSIBLE TO ALL: Multiple difficulty levels, an integrated tutorial and friendly advisors are all here to help newcomers and seasoned Civ veterans alike. SAME GAME, SMALLER SCREEN: Sid Meier ‘s Civilization Revolution for iPhone and iPod touch has all the same civilizations, gameplay and scenarios from the award winning console game. It ‘s all of the goodness of Civ right in the palm of your hands.
I was tired last night and only got to play Civilization for a short while, but I was encouraged with everything I saw. I ‘ve got to get used to the icons and doing things quickly, but it looks very faithful to the game I ‘ve always liked so much on a PC.
I did manage to grab some screencaps that show off some of what ‘s in the game.
Choosing your civilization / leader is via a Coverflow interface, which is very nice but which I also found moved a little too quick most of the time:
You can choose to play one of the pre-set scenarios or a random map game:
I ‘d not tried out Civ Revolution on the PC, so many of the scenarios look very good to me:
There are some good tutorials to make use of when you are starting out with the game:
When you exit the game and come back in, it offers a ‘Continue ‘ option that picks up right where you left off. It also has ten saved games slots, which is very nice to see.
All of Civilization ‘s familiar features seem to be present in the iPhone version so far
So as you have probably guessed, I ‘m very impressed with the game so far. The graphics “ though of course they ‘re not rapid-fire or spectacular “ look top notch, and the gameplay is smooth and challenging looking.
That ‘s about it for early impressions. A real old favorite that looks very nicely rendered for the iPhone.
You can find Civilization Revolution in the App Store HERE, priced at that 48-hour sale price of $4.99 for now “ not sure when that ends as there ‘s no start or end date stated for it.
