It's much easier than tapping all over the place. I use the tap and drag for pretty much all symbols and numbers.

If you type a number/symbol then press space it returns you to the QWERTY view, but if you want to type, say "1B" you have to press the symbol button, type 1, press the ABC button and type B.

Instead, when you press the symbol button DRAG YOUR FINGER OVER TO THE 1 and then let go. It'll type the 1 and return you to the QWERTY view.

I just tried this, and it actually works really well. My left thumb always gets more fatigued than my right thumb. Now I just have to start training my thumbs to remember this new behavior.
