OK, as all of you know, we don ‘t even pretend to know anywhere near enough to cover the iPhone from any sort of business perspective “ but once in while some of the reports and numbers about its standing in the marketplace catch our eye. This week has already got a couple of examples, courtesy of two reports at Apple Insider.
The first shows the tremendous growth of the iPhone ‘s share of worldwide smartphone sales in the last reported quarter (Q2 of 09). Its share of the global smartphone market jumped from less than 3% in Q2 of 2008 to over 13% in this year ‘s Q2 results “ placing them third amongst smartphone manufacturers, and really no that far behind the number 2, Blackberry.
One thing that jumped off the page for me in Apple Insider ‘s report on this was that those big gains were made even before the impact of the recent iPhone 3GS launch is felt in results.
Apple initially moved into third place globally in the third quarter of 2008, as the iPhone has continued its expansion internationally. The impact of the recently launched iPhone 3GS will not be seen until the second half of 2009, the Gartner analysis said.
Give how much of a hit the 3GS appears to be, I ‘d imagine second half results should be even more impressive.
For lots more detail on this subject, see Apple Insider ‘s post HERE.
The second report that drew my attention is today ‘s “ again at Apple Insider (and plenty of other sites) “ that Apple has reportedly sold 5 million iPhones to China Unicom, a leading carrier in China. If that number doesn ‘t strike you as big enough in it ‘s own right, here ‘s a little context for it:
To put the 5 million total in perspective, the iPhone maker sold 5.2 million total iPhones worldwide in the last financial quarter.
Seems like there should be some happy folks in Cupertino with these sort of numbers.
Why is this interesting to us as users? Hopefully these sparkling numbers mean more profits and, more importantly, more investment in future models, more OS improvements, more App Store improvements, and a better and better platform for all of us.
