The Free Memory app for the iPhone has been taken out of the App Store by its developers, after Apple demanded that the ability to free up memory be removed from it.
I wondered way back in February, when I first noticed this app, how the heck it got allowed into the App Store “ as they wouldn ‘t even allow system-level access for things like theming, yet this app was allowed to interact with running processes etc.
This is a really useful app though, and it ‘s a shame to see its core feature stripped away.
The crack-down on this feature now, after at least 6 months of the app being in the App Store, makes me a little curious as well. I wonder if there was something in particular that made them turn their attention to this app now, or is it a sign of a more wide-ranging initiative Apple is taking?
It ‘s also another example of Apple not getting all their ducks in a row in terms of consistency in this area “ as the iStat app remains in the store “ HERE “ and offers the same capability to free up RAM memory.
Here ‘s more detail on Free Memory ‘s absence from the store and plans for getting back in, from the developer ‘s site:
Apple has demanded that we remove the feature to Free Memory from all our apps. We have decided to remove our existing Free Memory 1.5 and MemoryInfo 1.1 apps from sale. We have instead submitted Free Memory Lite and MemoryInfo Lite without the Free Memory feature.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY COPY OF FREE MEMORY 1.5?
You will still be able to use your Free Memory 1.5. Just make sure you do not delete it as you will not be able to repurchase it from the App Store.
You can read it in full, and keep an eye out for future updates, at the Recession Apps site.
I ‘ve got both Free Memory and iStat and will be holding onto them dearly now for sure.
Thanks to our site reader Scott for pointing me to this news via the comments on another Free Memory related post.
