Actually, I believe that it has to do with examining an app's provisioning file to see if it's legit or something similar.

I don't know, but I imagine by looking at a UDID (which is not tied to any other personal data within the aggregated reports) and seeing whether that UDID is associated with the purchase of a particular app. We know UDIDs are used to track registered beta testers for apps.
