Review: iGarageSale for iPhone

iGarageSale iPhone app

iGarageSale is a fairly new iPhone app that helps you find garage sales near you.  It collects its data from various sources (Craigslist etc) and is continually updated.

I ‘ve been trying the app out over the last couple of weeks and it works quite well.

Here are some of the app ‘s main features, per its App Store page:

  • Browse “ sales near you for a given day or week
  • Search “ quickly locate items near your current location, a city, or a zip code (e.g baby clothes within 15 miles of my current location)
  • Favorites
  • Share a map and list of your favorite sales via email, Facebook, or Twitter
  • Directions to garage sales available

The app is very easy to use, makes good use of the built-in Google Maps feature, and presents and updates its data impressively quickly.

It will use your current location if you let it, and update the map on launch (if it ‘s in Browse mode) with drop pins showing sales in your area.  As always with the Maps app, you can start out looking at a broad area, like Austin

And then zoom in to neighborhoods that are local to you

Tapping on an individual drop pin offers headline info for a sale and, again just as we ‘re used to with the Maps app, tapping the blue arrow on the right takes you to a details page for that particular sale

Some even have photos included within the details page

The ability to mark favorites is useful “ as there may be quite a few interesting looking sales on any given weekend, and you can mark off a handful and then go back through and choose just the most promising ones.

Being able to share the details for an interesting sale is also handy.

We ‘ve already found the app genuinely useful in helping us find a good sale last weekend “ with an ex-teacher selling off lots of useful school supplies and similar items.

I was going to say something about how useful garage sales can be in these troubled economic times “ but the truth is my wife and I have always found them to be very useful, regardless of how the overall economy is doing.

We ‘re not always very on-the-ball about keeping track of when a good-looking sale is coming up though “ so iGarageSale seems quite promising to keep around.  It may help us find a few more bargains, and find the places they ‘re at much more easily.

You can find iGarageSale in the App Store now, currently priced at $0.99.
