Quick Look: Convert for iPhone

Like I said last night, I think Convert is so cool that I’ve replaced my old converter (Convertbot) and my calculator (Calculator, tee hee) with it. Developer tap tap tap has made one of those user interfaces that makes you wonder what the heck you were doing before it came along.

All the action in Convert takes place on one screen: tap  and scroll along the left-most roller  to select one of the 15 conversion categories, select what you’d like to convert to and from, and then tap out the measurements in the keypad below. If you’re looking to free up some space on your first iPhone home page, I’d suggest replacing the default calculator app with Convert, since the last “converter” within the app is actually a basic calculator. There’s no landscape scientific mode, but it works!

The app loads up in about two seconds and switching categories takes about one second. I think the app is beautifully designed: it’s simple, efficient, and it doesn’t overwhelm you by jamming content onto the screen. I really only have two very minor complaints about the app, and these could easily be fixed in a future update.

Navigating is already easy, but tap tap tap also included a starring feature to bookmark the converters that you use the most. Unfortunately, this feature still seems to be a little glitchy, as converters seem to star and un-star themselves on a whim. I had to re-visit each of my favourites two or three times before the settings actually stuck.

The final minor complaint is about the available measurements themselves. Some converters, like the one for currency, offer more units than I’d ever actually use. My most frequent conversion is from USD to CAD, and I have very little use for the Czech Republic Koruny in my day to day life. What I’d like here is the ability to hide the units that I don’t use (which Convertbot does feature, by the way) so that I can cater the app even more to my needs.

Neither of the above complaints are dealbreakers for me, though. I still think that tap tap tap’s Convert is far and away the best, most efficient conversion app out on the App Store to date — and it’s still on sale for $0.99! So let us know in the comments if you’re a Convert convert or, if not, what app you worship use instead.

Convert is still on sale for $0.99 (and I’m not actually sure that sale is ever going to end), and the App Store link is here.
