[I’ve also posted a one-month-later review update of this product here]
What is that on the back of my iPhone? It’s a skin. A MusicSkin, even (although there’s nothing musical about the one I custom designed).
I received my review sample earlier this week and I’ve really been enjoying how thin the product is. You almost forget it’s there until you turn the phone over to write a review about it, at which point you are stunned by unexpected awesomeness staring you right in the face.
Form
MusicSkins are so thin you can actually still use a case on top of one as long as it isn’t an incredibly tight fit. You can use the iPhone without a case, too, and the skin the back a glossy, smooth rubbery texture.

I was nervous while putting mine on since I royally suck at these kinds of applications, but it fit on the back just like a big sticker. The edges are tapered so that they don’t get snagged when you slide the phone into a case or pocket – nice touch. The skin covers most of the back, but stops just short of the chrome bezel, volume buttons, and corners. I really appreciate this, since it’s always a massive pain trying to apply a skin over those sections. They’re always the first ones to peel or get mucked up with dirt, and I’m glad I don’t have to deal with that with the MusicSkin. There’s no real guarantee for how long the skin will stay on, but I’d guess that it could last at least a couple of months (or even longer if you really nail the installation).

My Design
As far as the actual printed design goes: I love it, and I love how I got to choose my own design on their website. All I had to do was upload an image, resize it, and then place it. I could also have added a background colour or custom text, but I thought I’d keep it simple. The design turned out beautifully, and I can’t can’t believe the custom skins cost the same as the ready-made ones. Very cool.
Conclusion
I think these MusicSkins make a great alternative to invisible films like Bodyguardz or InvisibleShield. They’re not marketed as scratch protection, but as long as your pocket or bag isn’t modeled after a spiky deathtrap, your printed skin should be just fine.

So if you’re looking for a thin, stylish, and hassle-free back covering for your iPhone, then I definitely recommend paying the MusicSkins website a visit. See if they already have a design based on your favourite band, or just create your own rocking design like I did!

MusicSkins cost about $15 each, although you could also apply for a 50% discount if you send them a “junk” skin (details on the website FAQ).
