Welcome to Free Reign #11. I had initially assembled this roundup based on the names of the apps. What the Font and Drunk Dial (now “Drinks and Cocktails” as of v2.0) stood out from the crowd and Eight Glasses a Day…well, I just thought it was interesting that somebody had designed an app that revolved around eight glasses of water a day.
- What the Font
- Drinks and Cocktails (formerly Drunk Dial)
- Eight Glasses a Day
What the Font
Concept: An easy way to find out what font you’re looking at, right from your iPhone.
Strengths: Great concept.
Non-Strengths: Results were never very easy to ascertain. Wrote “Calibri” in Calibri in an MS Word screenshot and app still suggested other fonts. UI for individual letter recognition is confusing.
Overall: I’m sure that font recognition isn’t a very easy task for an app, but both the UI and performance were pretty poor in this app. I’d avoid it for now.
Drinks and Cocktails
Concept: Easy drink mixes all in one place! Tag favourites and filter by ingredients.
Strengths: Uses roller to select drinks, ingredients and instructions always shown below. Featured category shows a drink appropriate for the season.
Non-Strengths: Refining interface for filtering ingredients can be a bit unwieldy, since it’s based on pages instead of a list.
Overall: I thought the old “Drunk Dial” title was funnier, albeit a bit misleading. Otherwise it seems like a decent way to start mixing your own cocktails.
Eight Glasses a Day
Concept: A reminder to drink those eight glasses of water eac
Strengths: Well thought out. App badge refreshes daily to show how many more glasses need drinking. Tapping on glass starts a drinking animation.
Non-Strengths: Could maybe use some info like “time since last glass”
Overall: Goes very well with “Drinks and Cocktails”, especially the day after. Cute, effective niche app.
