The Skype app for the iPhone has had an update, to Version 1.2. This latest version has added a good number of new features and promised improvements “ though Thomas and I were not seeing evidence of all of them when testing it out a little yesterday.
Here are some of the new features and improvements listed for this version:
- Set up call forwarding from your iPhone “ forward Skype calls to a phone number when you ‘re not signed in.
- Improved performance and better audio quality on Skype-to-Skype calls
- Even easier to send text messages “ send SMS from the Call tab
- Calls are connected much faster
- Status of your contacts is updated more often
- You can now decide whether you want to stay online / offline when the iPhone is locked.
- Contact groups are now supported
That ‘s a good list of enhancements. The call forwarding “ which I ‘ve not tested as yet “ is a big plus.
On the few things that Thomas and I were able to test yesterday, our results were hit and miss. We both agreed that the call quality on our Skype to Skype (and both on iPhone) calls was excellent.
I did not see calls getting connect ‘much faster ‘ though. Call connections were slow and erratic in our testing over approximately a 30 minute period. Your mileage may vary of course, but we had dropped calls and slow connecting phases.
We also certainly did not see status of contacts being updated more often. In fact, that ‘s what torpedoed our testing after a while “ the app was continually showing each of us that the other was offline, even when we were absolutely not.
I ‘m hoping that some (or all) of the new features work better than some of the improvements do so far, or that the folks at Skype are already working on the next update “ as this one seems patchy so far.
Have any of you tried out this update yet? If so, what are your experiences?
