In reply to Andrew. Go to Settings > Store > View Account (you have to sign in at this point) - then down below your payment info and billing address etc, you'll see 'Turn Off Genius for Apps'.

I take it this is 3.1 specific? Is there any way to jailbreak (don't care about unlock) on 3.1 yet?
