Well .. it ‘s taken quite a while, but we finally have an official Flickr app for the iPhone.
There have been plenty of Flickr apps around for the iPhone since even before the App Store opened, but now we have one from Yahoo (owners of Flickr) themselves, and it ‘s a pretty good one.
This new Flickr app does a very good job in most places, but is also lacking in a few areas.
The app looks gorgeous, throughout its pages “ and is especially good for enjoying and discovering photos from your contacts and throughout Flickr.
When you first launch it, you get an extremely slick slideshow of photos that uses some neat transition effects.
Navigation throughout the app “ which admittedly does not have very many sections “ is simple and completely intuitive. If you ‘re in the mood for browsing photos, you can search throughout all Flickr uploads, or just your own, or those of your Flickr contacts
Or you can check out an individual ‘s photostream
You can check out sets and tags within a stream, and easily switch into slideshow style viewing as well
One thing that ‘s missing “ perhaps intentionally “ is an ability to easily save any of the images down to your photo library, as you can if you ‘re at the Flickr site within Mobile Safari.
You ‘re also very limited in terms of methods for sharing an image that you like “ email is the only option offered, no Twitter or Facebook or other social networks.
I also have not seen where my Flickr groups are within the app, or whether they are included in the app yet. This is not a huge deal, but it would be nice to see those as well.
On the uploading side of things, Flickr is a bit hit and miss again. The app of course lets you choose to upload an existing image or take a new photo
When you upload, you have a good strong range of options to set, including sets, tags, and privacy settings
I have not found a way to upload multiple pics at once so far, and don ‘t think it is included in the app as yet. For me, that ‘s a big miss “ as I often want to upload in batches, and will continue to use the excellent FlickIt app for that purpose.
Overall, I think the Flickr app is quite well done. It feels a bit like a 1.0 version, which it is, and could certainly do with adding some more features in future updates “ but it is very nicely designed, works well, and is certainly a pleasure to use for browsing around the world of Flickr images.
You can find the Flickr app in the App Store now, and it ‘s a free app.
