For most people the iPhone is the primary mobile music source, but it’s not always convenient to use it for playback once you get home unless you have a specialized dock and remote control. More often than not, I use the MacBook hooked up to my Logitech speakers for music – and when I do this I usually start up a whole new playlist. But what about the song I was listening to just a moment before on my iPhone? Am I really going to just leave it there – alone and unlistened?! Seems rude, doesn’t it?!
Luckily, there’s an app for that. Keep it Playing interfaces with iTunes as a wi-fi remote so that you can seamlessly play the same song or podcast on your computer.
Setup
The first thing you have to do is make sure your iPhone and computer (I used my MacBook) are on the same network. Once that’s done, launch the app on your iPhone and enter the on-screen code into iTunes. This sets the app up just like the Remote so that it can access your iTunes library, well, remotely.

Seamless transition
I’m sure there are other possible use cases, but I saw this app as the perfect way to keep the groove or momentum of whatever playlist I was listening to before I got to my desk. Once the app is set up properly, all it takes is a tap on the icon to instantly play the song on the computer and stop the playback on the iPhone. This is all remote software, and no streaming is going on, so you’ll have to make sure that your computer has the same files as your iPhone. Otherwise, it’s a hassle-free way to continue dancing if it happens to be one of those days that you made a bet with your friends about dancing until you go to sleep (don’t pretend it never happened to you!).

It’s also just really, really cool to have the song from your iPhone suddenly resound from your desktop speakers. Somebody should make a movie about it!
Songs, not podcasts
Although the app says it deals with songs and podcasts, I couldn’t ever get the latter to work with Keep It Playing. My podcasts are just fine and I’ve kept them in the regular spot in my iTunes library, but they just never seemed to work.

Conclusion
This certainly doesn’t seem like one of those chart-topping applications, nor is it one that everyone will need. However, it is a cool little niche app that makes it ridiculously easy for you to keep your song playing if it was just getting to the part you liked 😉
