Computerworld is reporting that Apple acquired Placebase, a mapping company, last July.
Placebase is similar to Google Maps in that it is a mapping service and has the world mapped out. You can zoom in and out and it has different layers you can superimpose over your mapping data.
Placebase CEO Jaron Waldman’s LinkedIN profile shows that he is now part of Apple’s ‘Geo Team’.
Two areas that I can think of where Apple uses map technology is iPhone’s Maps application, and iPhoto ’09. Currently Apple uses Google’s map services for these applications. With the acquisition of Placebase, it appears Apple may want to use Placebase’s unique features, by agrigating both Placebase’s and Google’s data together.
At first glance, and it is too early to tell, it appears Apple is trying to wean itself off of any Google dependency they may have. Tensions between Apple and Google are rising, and things could get messy.
