Quick Look: Lets Draw Some Sheep for iPhone

Clouds are easy to draw: they’re just big, fluffy blobs that float in the air — and most of us are never close enough to them to really criticize how well they’re drawn. Sheep are another story altogether. Yeah, they might look like a bunch of clouds strategically attached in various sizes, but they’re trapped on the ground for everyone to criticize. That’s why the “Let’s Draw Some Sheep” app exists (or maybe it’s just a weird story some writer made up). This app is tailor made to turn your baaaaaad drawings of sheep into better ones as long as you can draw within the lines.

Step One : draw sheep
This is actually the only real step in the app, but don’t worry about that for now: we’ve got a fluffy animal to assemble! The whole drawing is expertly split up into several stages, so even if you’re feeling sheepish about putting an animal together on your iPhone, you should be just fine. When you start drawing a sheep each individual body part will zoom onto the screen (along with a general outline to help you out), so that you can design your ideal sheep bit baaaa bit.

It would have been just a little bit easier for me if the individual parts were labeled, as I first thought that the ear I was drawing was actually an eye (that sheep sucked). Aside from that small suggestion, I have no other issues with the drawing section.

Step Two: admire your sheep
Once you’ve drawn your sheep in its entirety, it will magically spring to life right on your iPhone screen so that you can enjoy the various things it will do for you. Unfortunately, it turns out that drawn sheep are much like real sheep in that they’re still not very exciting. Their heads bob, their tails wiggle, and the background transitions subtly from night to day (although that has nothing to do with the sheep). Feel free to pull the wool over your eyes, folks. 😀

After you’ve gazed at the sheep for a few seconds and seen all there is to see, you can speak to it by yelling “Baaaaa” into the mic. Or you can swipe at it in different directions and watch it react. It’s pretty cute, but what’s hilarious is when the sheep’s ear accidentally detaches and ends up pasted to the top of the screen. I’m pretty sure this is a bug in the app, but it was hilarious when my sheep’s right ear suddenly disappeared and re-appeared right at the top of the screen — still moving perfectly in time with the sheep’s head. This sheep’s crazy, man.

Step Three: admire and count your sheepz
You’ve made one sheep, so why not make more? You’re already in the app, after all. After you finish and save a sheep you can see a “flock view” (sounds insulting if you say it quickly) of all of your creations thus far. If you’re wondering what to do with the flock, why not count them?
Just tap the button along the bottom of the screen to watch your sheep jump endlessly over a one-post fence while your iPhone keeps an on-screen tally for you.

Conclusion
As essential as sheep are to our everyday lives and sweaters, not everyone is going to want a piece of this action. However, if sheep drawings are your thing, then I found Lets Draw Some Sheep to be one of the more engaging,  hilarious, and lovingly crafted $0.99 apps out there.

Lets Draw Some Sheep is $0.99 on the App Store and this link is for you.
