Review: SplashID – Secure Password Manager App

SplashID Screen Shot - image credit SplashData It was recently brought to our attention, that while we ‘ve often talked about and given away promo codes for SplashData ‘s SplashID iPhone app, we ‘ve never actually published a formal review. So here I am to rectify that oversight!

SplashID is a secure password manager app that also has a desktop companion that can wirelessly sync with the iPhone. All data stored in SplashID is encrypted using 256-bit AES and Blowfish encryption, two of the strongest encryption types available.

The app is protected by a passcode, which locks out after 10 failed attempts, and the stored data is unreadable by any other app. SplashID also includes a built-in password generator, so you can easily create secure passwords.

With the level of security SplashData has built into SplashID, it truly is like ‘Fort Knox for passwords and other confidential records. ‘ Even if your iPhone is lost, your data remains safe. That is unless you write your passcode on a post-it note and stick it to the back of your iPhone. But I think that points to another problem altogether, and not something SplashID could help you with.

SplashID is fairly straightforward and intuitive. On first launch, you go through the process of adding some personal information to create and protect your digital wallet. You then begin adding an unlimited number of records and storing the relevant information.

Password fields are masked, and only revealed when you want them to be. Records can be categorized and have an icon assigned to help identify at a glance. You can also attach documents and pictures to a record to be stored securely and retrieved at a later date.

SplashID Mac Screen Shot SplashData also has a Mac and Windows version of SplashID. Since this is an iPhone website, I ‘m not going to go into detail about the desktop versions of this app, except to say that the functionality is on par with the iPhone version.

You can run both the iPhone app and the desktop versions independently, or use the wireless syncing functionality to keep all your passwords in sync. Unfortunately, as Apple doesn ‘t let other apps use iTunes syncing, SplashData must be synced separately.

Fortunately, they ‘ve made this process just as easy as can be. Make sure both your iPhone and computer are connected to the same wifi network, then run SplashID on your Mac or PC first, and finally open the iPhone app and tap on the sync button. All your records, categories, and documents will sync across effortlessly.

If you frequently find yourself sitting at a password prompt trying to rack your brain to remember what you might have used, or worse yet, you have the single password you use for everything written on a post-in stuck to your monitor, then you need SplashID!

You can find SplashID in the iPhone App Store (link) for $9.95, and the Mac or Windows version can be purchased from their website (link) for $9.95.

Note: There is also a free version of the SplashID desktop app. SplashData still has the previous 4.6 version of SplashID available on their website for free download. They note this is the last free update to this version. Upgrading to the current version 5 is $9.95.
