I did a review just a few days back on an excellent iPhone trivia app for fans of the World Cup and of football (of the soccer variety that is) “ World Cup Trivia Challenge. This weekend I spotted another trivia app for fottie fans, this time one that is specific to UK football clubs.
Funnily enough, the app is called simply UK Football Teams Trivia Quiz. I ‘m a huge fan of the English Premier League, and follow the lower divisions a bit “ so I gave this one a go yesterday.
The game offers a number of different modes to play in. There are several pass-and-play two player modes available. I haven ‘t tried any of these as I don ‘t have any friends or family who are footie fans like I am, so there ‘s nobody who would have any interest in playing this with me. That ‘s fine, I ‘m good with solo trivia modes.
The modes available for a single player include ABCD (standard multiple choice questions), Race Against Time (with slow, medium, fast options for how quick time runs out on you on each question), Guess The Question, and Battleships. More on those last two below.
I stuck mainly with the classic ABCD multiple-choice (non timed) mode, as I found the game pretty challenging at the outset anyway. The main reason it is quite challenging for me is that it covers English clubs trivia dating back into not just the early 20th century, but all the way back into the late 19th century! So quite a few questions begin with words like ‘In the 1892 FA Cup final ‘.
I ‘m an avid fan of the English game as I ‘ve said, but my knowledge of the game / clubs once we go back much more than 20-25 years is minimal “ so there ‘s a fair bit of the question content in the game that I stand no chance on (first time round) and honestly have very little interest in. So far, my best effort “ using a set of 20 questions (you can set the number of questions you want each game, from 5-50) “ is 15 out of 20, when I got lucky on the question set with mostly questions covering periods I knew fairly well.
I ‘m pretty sure I could soon surpass this score if I continue playing the game, as the pool of questions is currently just 250 and once I see repeats it becomes much easier to get things right of course (even on those that go 100+ years back).
The Guess The Question mode is very poorly implemented. Why? Because the choices it offers on pretty much every question are ridiculously easy, usually showing two choices that do not make any sense given the answer, and only one that could possibly work. For example, the answer on the one below is ‘True ‘ “ and two of the choices offered are not questions that could possibly have true or false as an answer.
So to say that this mode is not challenging would be a huge understatement.
The Battleship mode is just sort of goofy. You answer questions in the same way as in ABCD mode, but when you get one correct, you get to tap to try to find a ship on the grid somewhere. Maybe this will add big entertainment value for some “ it did nothing for me.
Two other things I don ‘t like about the app are the design and the way you have to review answers at the end of a game. The color scheme of the app is not at all easy on the eyes in my view, with its dark gradated backgrounds.
When you get a question wrong, all you see is a big red ‘X ‘ “ you get no indication of which was the correct answer. For that, you have to wait until the end of a game and look through a review of all your answers. I ‘m just too lazy to do that most of the time.
Overall, even being a big fan of English football, I didn ‘t enjoy this game very much “ and will likely not keep it around. Other fans who know their club histories back to the dawn of time may love the focus of the app “ but I would enjoy it more if it was focused on slightly more recent clubs trivia. The number of modes of play could do with being reduced, as several are just not appealing and not well executed. It also needs a far bigger set of questions, and better design.
You can find UK Football Teams Trivia Quiz in the App Store now, priced at $2.99.
