In just a short number of months I ‘ve gone from never having heard of the steampunk genre of writing to being a big fan of it, thanks to the Steampunk Tales series of apps for the iPhone. So I ‘m happy to see that the publishers of the series are continuing to pump out fresh new content on a regular basis.
This week, Steampunk Tales Issue # 3 has hit the iPhone App Store, and it ‘s chock full of more first-run steampunk fiction.
Here ‘s a little more about the issue and the series, from the publisher ‘s press release:
Steampunk Tales: Issue #3, an electronic pulp-fiction magazine. Emulating the style of the pulp adventure magazines of the 1920s and ’30s, Steampunk Tales is a monthly publication that contains first-run, original fiction written by an A+ list of award-winning authors. Issue #3 contains 10 stories, most running between 4,000 to 11,000 words. Originally available exclusively as a native iPhone application, Steampunk Tales is now available on a variety of popular eBook and computer platforms including iPhone, Amazon Kindle, MobiPocket eBook and additionally as a DRM-free Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) digital download. In the spirit of the economy of the classic pulp magazines, a retail price of $1.99USD on most platforms provides an extraordinary value.
Tales in issue #3 include:
1. Dark Skies and Cruel Seas by Arkwright
2. The Unfortunate Case of the Stabbed-Up Elf by August Wahnsinger
3. Convergence Culture by C.B. Harvey
4. Hunting the Future, Pt. 2 of 2 by Mark Rossmore
5. One Million Monkeys, Ltd. by George S. Walker
6. Letters Between Young Ladies… Pt.2 by Jillian Venters
7. On the Surface of Venus by Michael Stutz
8. The Mask of Tezcatlipoca, Pt.2 by G. D. Falksen
9. The Revolutionary by John Leavitt
10. The Shew Stone by C.G. LeslieThe cover art was created by popular artist Chet Phillips.
I really like the cover art used in each issue, and have so far enjoyed all of the tales I ‘ve read in the previous two paid issues and one free issue. The quality of writing is consistently very high and the stories are nearly always the kind that have you fully sucked in after just a sentence or two. My review of the original app in the Steampunk Tales series is HERE.
I ‘m also happy to learn from John Sondericker, the publisher of Steampunk Tales, that there are plans to changeover to a single app for this series in future, with in-app purchase used for the monthly new issues. For folks like me, who are enjoying all the issues, this is a good home screen space saver, and just a neater way to have your full collection of content available to you all in one app.
You can find Steampunk Tales Issue # 3 in the App Store now, priced at $1.99.
