AppleInsider is reporting that Apple may soon be dropping the “Mighty” part of the “Mighty Mouse” moniker. Apple has sold the Mighty Mouse since August of 2005, and was the first Apple mouse to have two buttons.
This news comes after computer accessory maker Man & Machine won the right to use the “Mighty Mouse” name after a legal battle with both Apple and CBS (CBS owns the Mighty Mouse cartoon trademarks, and thus the name). Just now the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office made the trademark registration official, said Man & Machine CEO Clifton Broumand.
This development means Man & Machine now owns the Mighty Mouse name, and that means anyone that also wants to use the name has to have permission. Reportedly, Apple has not approached Man & Machine for permission to continue to use the name, which may indicate a mouse rebranding on the horizon for Apple.
This story falls in line with recent rumors suggesting that Apple is working on a new mouse with multitouch functionality to replace the scroll ball.
