NVIDIA Leaving Chipset Business Awaiting Results of Licensing Dispute with Intel

ZDnet is reporting on NVIDIA’s announcement that they would will “postpone further chipset investments” after an licensing issue with Intel’s Nehalem and Core processors families. Why does this affect Apple you ask? Good question. The answer, Apple heavily uses NVIDIA chipsets in all of their computers with the exception of the MacPro, because of their low-power high-performance architecture.

Intel claims that its four-year-old chipset license with NVIDIA doesn’t cover the Nehalem or Core series of CPUs. NVIDIA naturally disagrees with this and as a result is that both parties will fight it out in court sometime in 2010.

You may remember, we reported in July that there were rumors circulating that Apple was preparing to shift away from NVIDIA chipsets due to high manufacturing defects. This claim was later denied by other sources close to the matter. That said, this licensing debacle seems to have put an end to Apple’s usage of NVIDIA chipsets. Also of note, NVIDIA will also cease production of chipsets for AMD processors, claiming there just isn’t a demand for them.
