Apple Still Causing Worldwide NAND Flash Memory Shortages

Digitimes is reporting that Apple’s iPod and iPhone lines of products are still creating an industry-wide NAND Flash memory shortages. In fact, Apple uses so much of the NAND that world wide demand exceeds supply. This shortage will probably last throughout the rest of 2009 due to the upcoming holiday season.

Taiwan-based memory module houses are moving to diversify their NAND flash suppliers to minimize procurement risk, according to industry sources. NAND flash supply has reportedly become tighter as major chip producers Samsung Electronics, Toshiba, Micron and Hynix Semiconductor favor demand for Apple devices.

Taiwan’s module makers have relied heavily on Samsung for NAND flash supply, but they are likely to increase their orders to IM Flash now, the sources commented.

There is good news, however, is that NAND supplies are expected to rebound in the first part of 2010. The bad news is that another shortage is expected soon after due to increased smartphone sales.
