It’s still tough to find some free apps that aren’t demos, but here we are again with a sampling of the freebies of the App Store:
- Marine Sharpshooter
- Topple 2+
- Photoshop.com Mobile (also covered in Patrick’s post)
Marine Sharpshooter

Concept: A touch-screen based sniper game with a campaign and arcade mode.
Strengths: Good, immersive sound; some effort went into a story; headshots are satisfying
Non-Strengths: controls a little sluggish, esp. dragging the scope around the screen. Zooming in looks awkward, since the scope looks like it’s zooming in on area with aboslutely no enemies.
Overall: I’m surprised this game is free — it looks to me like it would normally go for a dollar or two. It’s not the best game out there, but it’s something interesting to try for without using up any of your precious cash money.
Topple 2

Concept: Kinda reminds me of Stackrobats -> Stack them tall, don’t let them fall!
Strengths: Good multi-touch usage to rotate blocks, accelerometer to tilt blocks in the direction you want. Satisfying block stacking! Plus+ multiplayer integration, if you’re into that kind of thing.
Non-Strengths: None.
Overall: Another quality free game that could easily sell for $2.99 or so — and I think it did when it first came out, so grab it now that it’s free!
PS Mobile

Concept: Some of Photoshop’s awesome powers, for free, on your iPhone.
Strengths: Kickass control scheme, slide your finger to apply filters and effects and see the changes live. No controls bars on-screen, very minimal UI. Filters and effects are gorgeous. 2GB upload limit to Photoshop.com.
Non-Strengths: As it is a Photoshop app, there isn’t any connection to other photo upload sites like Flickr. etc.
Overall: A new, great, and free tool to add to your photo editing repertoire.
