MapQuest Navigator (link to review) has been re-launched on the App Store, albeit at a higher price point. You may remember from my earlier review post, the original $0.99 cost included a 14-day trial period, after which you could purchase a subscription using the in-app purchase.
According to MapQuest, they were told by Apple that they could not honor that pricing scheme. As of last night, it had appeared that MapQuest had been pulled from the App Store, as it was no longer showing up in searches and the direct link was broken.
Today, this is what is posted on MapQuest’s blog (link):
Some of you may have noticed that when we initially launched MapQuest Navigator for iPhone, we offered a $.99 price for a 14-day trial. Unfortunately, due to App Store restrictions, we are now unable to support this offer. The application is now initially available for one month at $3.99.
After the first month for $3.99, users can choose the subscription model that best suits their needs: one month at $3.99, three months at $9.99 or one year at $29.99.
I am unclear as to whether those who have already purchased the app at the previous price point will be able to continue using their 14-day trial, or – as they are supposedly unable to honor the trial – are they being grandfathered into a one-month extension? I have searched MapQuest’s website and have not found this question addressed. I sent an e-mail to their PR department and am waiting to hear back.
In the meantime, if you are interested in purchasing MapQuest Navigator, you can do so in the iPhone App Store here.
