Next-Gen Mac Pro to Have 6-Core Processor?

macpro.jpgHardmac is reporting that Apple may be planning an update to the Mac Pro in Early 2010. Moreover, this update would put Intel’s new “Gulftown” 6-core processors in the machines. This would be the first commercial machines to have the the new processor before Q2 of 2010 when the architecture is released to other computer manufacturers.

This Xeon is an evolution of those already powering Mac Pro 2009 with some new features:

– 6 cores and 12 threads for each CPU.
– 12 MB of shared cache instead of 8 MB today.
– 32-nm engraving vs. 45 nm today.
– Power consumption of future hexacore Xeon 32 nm will be slightly lower than the one of current quad core Xeon engraved at 45 nm.

The report goes on to say that the new Mac Pros will have 10Gbit connectivity, and support for 8 and 16GB RAM modules, bringing total RAM capacity to 128GB.

It is still unclear as to weather the new processors will be available to all Mac Pro models or just on Apple’s high end models.
