Apple Discontinues Work on ZFS Project

The ZFS project has been discontinued. The mailing list and repository will also be removed shortly.

ZFS is a file system developed by Sun that had been available for Mac OS X since 2007 as an open source project. This leas to speculation that ZFS would be the default file system for Leopard, but ended up with read-only capabilities.

ZFS popped up again when it was mentioned on Apple’s product description page for Snow Leopard Server, the information was soon removed, and of course ZFS never made it to Snow Leopard or Snow Leopard Server.

It appears the reason for dropping ZFS is due to licensing problems with Sun who was recently acquired by Oracle. Additionally, a job listing has appeared on Apple’s jobs page looking for a file system engineer, which suggests Apple could be developing its own file system technologies.
