One of the things about theming an iPhone is that it can be a little confusing if you don’t get an entire pack right off the bat. However, there’s no better excuse to try skinning out for the first time on the 3GS when it’s already nicely packaged and available for one-click download. Based on the screenshots on the Rock Your Phone website I didn’t think G.O.C. Pro would become a favourite, but it has some surprisingly charming elements that I could really get used to.

By the way, folks, this one’s a $1.99 paid theme.

The skin pack includes changes to the lock screen, most of the default apps, all of the sound effects, and even some cool extras like WeatherIcon and TaptoUnlock functionality. What I really came to love about the skin were the changes to the springboard and lock screen — they’re GORGEOUS on G.O.C. Pro.
Springboard and Lock Screen
The lock screen feels a lot roomier and classier, and the unlock sound is really cool. The 5-icon dock took a day or two for me to get used to, but it’s definitely the best dock setup I’ve seen yet. You’re meant to throw a very specific set of apps (SMS, Phone, Mail, Safari, iPod) in there, and four out of the five icons are shrunk so that you know Phone is supposed to sit right in the middle. I wish the real iPhone dock looked good with five icons.

I was also surprised that I didn’t really mind when icons weren’t skinned. AutoStitch and Photoforge sat square on my first homescreen alongside all of the other circular icons and they looked just fine to me.

Sound Effects
Activating G.O.C. Pro on your iPhone is like turning it from a a hip Apple device into something from an 80’s Sci-Fi movie. I liked the hi-tech sounds of locking and unlocking my phone, but other sounds — if you’ll excuse my Patrick Jordanese — really came out of left field (home run!). I don’t know what they’re doing over there in the left field, but it isn’t anything remotely droid related.

You’ll know what I mean when you first hear the incoming SMS tone. It’s about four or five seconds long and it sounds like Lisa playing the saxophone as she leaves class in that earlier Simpsons opening. If that sounds like a random, out-of-place reference, then you now understand my surprise upon first hearing the SMS tone.

Application skinning
Here is where G.O.C. Pro really threw me for a loop, and it’s definitely a matter of taste. I found the glass icons and lock screens gorgeous, and even though the SMS tone was a little loopy, I didn’t really mind it all that much. It’s the skinning of the applications that felt like real overkill. Instead of complaining, I’ll just show you what I mean.

Conclusion
I might end up using some of G.O.C. Pro’s elements, especially because the designer of the skin kindly split many of the elements up so that you can enjoy different variations of the same theme. I’ll definitely have to find something to replace the theme inside of apps, though. It just comes on too strong for my tastes.

G.O.C Pro is available on Rock Your Phone for $1.99.
