SpringSorter – Sorts Your iPhone Apps by Most Used (Jailbreak only)

SpringSorter iPhone app

SpringSorter monitors how much you launch your iPhone apps and automatically re-organizes them on your home screens with the most used ones going to the front (the first screens).

This is a great idea “ one that lots of folks have thought and talked about for ages as a method for organizing iPhone apps “ but one that I ‘ve never seen implemented until SpringSorter came out.  SpringSorter is a jailbreak app that allows you to employ the ‘most used ‘ method of arranging all your apps.

Here are some of the app ‘s features and options:

  • Rearrange your SpringBoard icons according to how much you use them.
  • Allows you to sort icons per page, or globally across all pages.
  • Protect pages you don ‘t want to auto rearrange.
  • Set a minimum amount of application usage before starting to move it.
  • Create a backup of your SpringBoard icon layout and restore it.
  • Manual or on-the-fly operating modes.

And a little lengthier description of what it does and how it works “ via the BigBoss site:

SpringSorter monitors how much you run the different applications installed on SpringBoard and allows you to reorganize the icon layout, making the things you use the most on top. This package was designed with many usage scenarios in mind and thus has lots of configuration options:

After installing SpringSorter it will automatically start to monitor your application usage behind the scenes. You can then start sorting and configurating the program via the settings program on your device.

I ‘ve tried the app out over a few days this week, and it works as advertised.  After about a day of use, it had made some fairly major changes to my second home screen (I set it to ignore my first screen and start on Page2).  Below are before (left) and after screencaps

A few things that stood out for me while using it are:

— I was surprised to see it within the main Settings app.  I expected it to have its own home screen icon, which it does not.

— I like its range of options, think they cover most of the bases you ‘d want for this sort of method “ including things like which page to start from (and I like the default of ignoring Page 1), and whether to apply its results per page (the default) or across all pages.

— It does not seem to register app launches via any other method than a tap on a Spring board icon.  So if you open an app from Spotlight, for example, SpringSorter will not register that launch.  I have a feeling this might be a dealbreaker for some folks.

Overall, I think SpringSorter is a very handy Springboard enhancement and a great idea “ but it strikes me as another one that is far more useful if you have up to perhaps 5 home screens worth of apps, and less useful if you are up in the 9-11 screens neighborhood.

As I am up in that  larger number of screens bracket, I still find PogoPlank is my preferred method of springboard enhancement (replacement really) “ but if I revert back to a traditional springboard I ‘ll definitely be grateful to have SpringSorter around.

SpringSorter is out now in the Cydia store, priced at $1.99.
