China Unicom Reports Only 5,000 Signed Up for iPhone Since Launch

Reuters is reporting that China Unicom has only signed on 5,000 iPhone customers since the handset’s official launch last week. Even in the face of this bad news, China Unicom Chairman Chang Xiobing still has a postive outlook for the iPhone. Additionally, China Unicom plans to broaden its 3G network, in which 1 million customers have already signed up for.

Xiobing went on to say that the iPhone will increase China Unicom’s revenue for Q4, even though the company will see smaller profit margins due to the cost of subsidies to Apple to pay for the device.

This just goes to prove my point I made recently, “…it looks like Apple’s biggest enemy in China, is Apple.” Apple is competing fiercely with unauthorized iPhones, are already in use on China Unicom’s netwrok, and usually sell for less than an “official” unlocked iPhone from China Unicom.
