Desert Island Apps – Number 3, with Joshua Schnell

DIA

Today we ‘re continuing our new series called ‘Desert Island Apps ‘.  It ‘s based on a very long-running and brilliant BBC Radio show called ‘Desert Island Discs ‘.  The premise of Desert Island Discs is simple and wonderful “ a guest is invited to choose the eight musical pieces (originally records) they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island.

In our case of course we ‘re not interested in our guests ‘ choice of music.  What we want to know is which six iPhone apps they would take with them if stranded on an island. We ‘re leaving the playing field pretty wide open for them “ letting them assume they ‘ve got WiFi and full connectivity on their island.

I ‘m very happy to have Joshua Schnell as our guest for today ‘s post.  Joshua is the Founder of Macgasm.net, a website dedicated to providing tips and tricks to Mac users.  The Macgasm team tries their damnedest to stay our of the echo chamber that is Mac news.  Read on for Joshua ‘s picks

** Joshua has given this a little twist by choosing one less app to take to his island, but also picking two that would be deleted from his iPhone. 🙂

Must delete apps before you leave on your trip.

Well first thing’s first, here’s the applications I wouldn’t take with me:-

Paradise Monkey,  I thought this was going to make my list, but then I realized that I’m stuck on some tropical island, and there’s a good chance there might be real monkeys to fling stuff at.  Real Monkeys are more interactive.

Stocks,  I know Apple doesn’t let us remove their applications, but if anything is going to drive me insane it’s going to be the stocks application.  With my luck, the moment I get stranded is the moment all my stocks go through the roof.  What’s worse then getting rich and being unable to sell, sell, sell.  Talk about the first ring of hell.

Here’s My Must Take With Me Apps

iStat istat
Listen, just because I’m stranded on an island with only my iPhone, it doesn’t mean that our readers should suffer either.  Someone has to make sure the server is running in tip top shape.  iStat gives you resource readings on local machines, and servers on the internet.  It helps me keep my sanity when I need to figure out why things are so sluggish.

Lexic  Lexic
The replay value is amazing, and it never gets old.  If you like word based games, then you know just what I’m talking about.  With most games you run out of options once you blow your way through all the levels, but with this word game you have limitless opportunity.  Maybe I’ll finally be able to take the top spot on their universal scoreboard while I’m on the island.

Twitterrific Twitterrific
Do you really think a twitter addiction can be broken by being stranded on an island?  Really?  At least twitterrific will save me from having to create my own personal "Wilson", and I can interact with real people.  Actually, now that I think about it Twitterrific is probably your best chance at getting rescued.  Turn on Exact Coordinates, and Use Location settings, and there’s a good chance they’ll know where you are.  Now you just have to hope someone out there thinks you’re worth saving and phones in your GPS coordinates.

GD Swarm GDSwarm
Tower defence games are a multi-faceted benefit for people stranded on an island.  Not only is it a extremely fun game, but it might just save your life.  You could think of it as a strategy planning tool for fortifying your location, just in case the previously mentioned monkeys decide to start fling their own stuff at you.  There’s a good chance that "stuff" would be faecal matter, and no one wants that in their hair.

1Shoot 1Shoot
If the only way I’ll be able to document my experience will be with the crappy iPhone camera then I better make sure I can take some decent pictures.  1Shoot helps you steady your camera by automatically taking a photo once the image is stabilized.  It’ll provide useful during low light reconnaissance missions against those damn monkeys.

Huge thanks to Joshua for doing Desert Island Apps with us!  I hope to make this a regular series “ and I hope it will help all of us to discover some great new apps.

Interesting little side note for today ‘s post “ Twitterrific is our first repeat entry in these lists.  Good stuff, it ‘s a great app.

If you feel like sharing what your Desert Island Apps picks would be, please fire away in the comments 🙂
