Today we ‘re continuing our new series called ‘Desert Island Apps ‘. It ‘s based on a very long-running and brilliant BBC Radio show called ‘Desert Island Discs ‘. The premise of Desert Island Discs is simple and wonderful “ a guest is invited to choose the eight musical pieces (originally records) they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island.
In our case of course we ‘re not interested in our guests ‘ choice of music. What we want to know is which six iPhone apps they would take with them if stranded on an island. We ‘re leaving the playing field pretty wide open for them “ letting them assume they ‘ve got WiFi and full connectivity on their island.
I ‘m very happy to say that for today ‘s post we ‘ve got a 2-for-1 deal going. We ‘ve got picks from the two charming hosts of Apps & Hats, the quirky and brilliant iPhone apps reviews site. Christine Morris and Hattie Medd do a video review show every two weeks running down some of their new favorite paid and free iPhone apps “ and today we ‘ve got both ‘the girls ‘ sharing their desert island picks.
Here are Christine ‘s picks:
If I were on a deserted island with wifi and full connectivity, then I would make the following app choices for that situation. (I think I would probably take a "how to survive living on a desert island" app but not sure there are any yet.)
TwitBird Pro
This is my current Twitter app of choice, I have been loyal to Twitterfon (now Echofon) since I can remember but since TwitBird Pro made its appearance into my life I can’t put it down. A great all-in-one Twitter app that’s quick and easy on the eyes.
Diggnation
Being stuck on an island means I wouldn’t be watching TV/Video, so I would have to get my Diggnation fix through this app. I could watch older episodes so it should keep me pretty up to date as well as keep me laughing (even if it’s just through watching the hilarious dark * knight episode over and over).
Seadragon
This is an unusual one for me but if I am stuck somewhere then I would love to be able to look at photos all over the world. It is a great way to see a lot of photos quickly and I really like how it loads and makes searching easy.
The Deep
Ok, I need to choose a game. I could not be without a game but this has proved to be the most difficult choice… I love so many, my favorites of all time are the original Flight Control and then the one that came after it, Harbor Master and Car Mania. Also Peggle could keep you busy for days! Having said that, I think I would go with a quick pick me up that is The Deep pinball game. I have always loved pinball and I could really get into it, or just have a quick game or two. I think it could keep me occupied. I will miss the others though! :'(
Skype
Keeping in touch through a slightly quicker way than with Twitter as well as being able to voice would be a must have and I think Skype does a great job of those so it’s a must have.
Byline
To keep from boredom and keep me in the ‘loop’ I would need a handy RSS reader. It’s not perfect but I love the icon for this beauty and I can mark things read pretty quickly & easily. It also shows me what I haven’t read and I think it loads fast too. My current reader of choice!

And here are Hattie ‘s picks:
Jamie Oliver-20 min meals
Being stuck on a desert island with no food= One Big Nightmare! But with Jamie Oliver on my side I would be whipping up fantastic meals in just 20mins… although I may need a bit more prep time than usual to stoke the fire. I would have to have this app with me as I would be sure to work up a huge appetite with all the sunbathing that would need to be done.
Tweetie
Having a twitter app with you would be a must, not only does it give you a great communication tool but it also keeps you up to date with all the vital news out there. I haven ‘t tested all the twitter apps that are out there but I find Tweetie has some fab features and it does everything I need twitter to do for me.
Facebook
Just imagine posting all your desert island photos on Facebook and watching your friends squirm with envy. I would have to have Facebook with me to keep up-to-date with family and friends and of course post all my amazing pictures.
DoodleJump
A fantastic little game that I can ‘t get enough of, it ‘s a game I just keep coming back to. The developers are doing such a great job with it and are producing some great updates to keep us all interested. The graphics are so adorable they will have you hooked for hours.
TapTap Revenge 3
Again another game I just can ‘t keep away from. I love this game because it combines game play with all your favourite songs, what could be better. With themed tracks by your favourite artists to keep things interesting I find this app a must have whether your stranded or on a desert island or not!
iTranslate
If I was stranded on an island and the not so friendly neighbourhood tribe stumbled upon me under my coconut tree, cooking up a treat with Mr Oliver I would want to be able to invite them to join me so I don ‘t end up being cooked in the pot too. Therefore iTranslate would be a must.
