Like Patrick (actually because of him), I’ve been a fan of Things task manager for a while now. It features gorgeous native apps on both the iPhone and the Mac, but as simple and minimal as it is, Things still hasn’t simplified the act of task creation. You’ve got to type in a task name, tap on “show details”, tap on the due date, select a due date, tap on a category, select a category, and then create your task. That long sentence actually takes mere seconds, but I wanted something that could take smarter input.
I’ll be trying ReQall out as my task manager over the next couple of days and it has a couple of really nifty features that make task creation much easier. For starters, ReQall parses the text you enter to recognize specific keywords. Second of all, it features free voice-to-text transcription so you can speak new calendar events and tasks into your phone or through the iPhone app. These two features make up an amazing combo for task or event creation, so telling ReQall “buy eggs tomorrow at 12 noon” will create a task in my shopping list with a due date of noon the next day. ReQall, like Evernote, is a “freemium” service, which means that the basic service is fully functional, but you can also purchase a Pro license if you’d like more advanced features. I don’t plan on adding any new expenses to my monthly bill, so my review will deal solely with the free version of the service.
