Today we ‘re continuing our series called Desert Island Apps. It ‘s based on a very long-running and brilliant BBC Radio show called ‘Desert Island Discs ‘. The premise of Desert Island Discs is simple and wonderful “ a guest is invited to choose the eight musical pieces (originally records) they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island.
In our case of course we ‘re not interested in our guests ‘ choice of music. What we want to know is which six iPhone apps they would take with them if stranded on an island. We ‘re leaving the playing field pretty wide open for them “ letting them assume they ‘ve got WiFi and full connectivity on their island.
I ‘m very happy to say that for today ‘s post we ‘ve got Dan Cohen as our ‘guest ‘. Dan used to be a major contributor here, is a good friend, and is now a prolific contributor and senior editor at the excellent Gear Diary site. Hit the jump for Dan ‘s Desert Island picks
Okay, so here are my "desert island apps" the apps that I would take with me were I stuck in a beautiful warm climate with no one to bother me.
With so much time on my hands I would finally have the opportunity to write the book that I have started and stopped more than a dozen times. This powerful application allows you to do serious document creation (and editing) your iPhone or iPod touch.
I currently use BeeJive IM on both my iPhone and iPod touch (since BeeJive does a better job with correcting my spelling). For this challenge, however, IM+ would be my choice in messaging apps. Why? Because it provides access all of the various messaging services that I use “ Skype, AOL, MSN messenger, twitter, Facebook, Yahoo, jabber, and more. It ‘s totally flexible and is a great all-in-one solution.
Just because I’m stuck on a desert island doesn’t mean that I’m not interested in what’s going on in the world. This application is a great one-stop shop for grabbing the news whenever and wherever I might be. Highly flexible it loads quickly, caches stories, and even gives access to photos and videos of interest.
And with it I just might be less inclined to get back to society and all its woes.
This application has all but replaced Safari on iPhone. The voice search feature works phenomenally well. In addition it gives access to a wide variety of Google’s applications including Gmail Google calendar, latitude in Google reader. Through this one portal I’ll have access to the entire web and all that it offers.
With so much time on my hands it only makes sense to spend some time looking for that "perfect picture". This application takes the iPhone’s camera to the next level by adding a zoom, the ability to capture pictures with sound, anti-shake and burst photography. Even if you have 100 camera apps on your iPhone already this is a must-have.
For my 6th application I thought I’d pick a game. What game do I continually return to? I Dig It. I don’t know what it is about this game that I love but I do. In it you have a digging machine and are challenged to perform a number of tasks in a set amount of time. Digging down, gathering a variety of objects and in the process lets you increase the speed and performance of your digging machine. This is one game that, since I first played it last summer, I keep coming back to over and over again. I hope there is an update soon.
Bonus App – I have been using an app that will be released some time in the next few months. When it is, typing on the iPhone will be a thing of the past. Were I allowed to discuss it it would be on the list… at the top! I can ‘t so it is not.

Huge thanks to Dan for doing Desert Island Apps with us! I hope to make this a regular series “ and I hope it will help all of us to discover some great new apps. That bonus app sure sounds interesting.
