Eliminate Pro for iPhone breached the Top Grossing list as a “freemium” app

Eliminate Pro

This news is a little old , but the achievement is still fresh. Apparently, Eliminate Pro (quick review here) is making people happy and making the developers some money, if their spot on the Top Grossing list last Friday (or was it earlier?) was any indication. ngmoco’s free-to-play online shooter lets you play as often as you want, but you’ll only earn credits for upgrades if your suit has energy. Energy replenishes once per day, but you can also buy more for $1, $10, or $30.

I don’t really find the model very worthwhile in its current iteration (too little time for your dollar, I say), but obviously people find it worthwhile enough to buy at least a few credits here and there. I’m guessing it has a lot to do with the instant gratification. You already have the app and the $1 or $10 recharge has an immediate effect because it’s not DLC (downloadable content) – it’s just an account setting to tell the server that you can earn points again. My criticisms of the energy purchasing aside, this is a good example of how to model freemium content. Eliminate Pro is a good-looking, fully-featured product that’s free to anyone, and all that the paid subscribers get is a fast track to the cooler content. Kudos to ngmoco for that.
