Quick Look: Rogers My Account, official usage tracker for Rogers iPhone users

Rogers My Account

Well this is a surprise: Rogers is actually doing something useful for its customers in the form of a free usage tracking application for the iPhone. I just downloaded the app earlier this morning, but there’s not much to it, so it’s easy to pump this quick review out.

First of all, it doesn’t work on wi-fi — you’ve got to be on a cellular data connection to use it (sorry no-data iPhone users). Upon first launching the application, it can take up to 20 seconds before any information shows up on-screen. However,  subsequent launches of the app show my account info within about five seconds on a 3G connection. That’s still a little slow, but it’s much faster than getting on a desktop client and logging into your My Rogers account or calling customer service.

There are three tabs along the bottom: Usage, Balance, and Help. The Usage tab lets you track your minutes, data, and messaging volume for the month via another set of tabs at the top. The Balance tab shows the total amount due for the current month, as well as your last month’s bill and the date that Rogers received payment (and as a nice little extra: you can actually make credit card payments to Rogers from right within the app). The last tab is Help, which is basically a FAQ for the app and a link to Apple’s iPhone Support page.

I do hope the app gets a little faster, but I’m actually surprised this was offered at all. I’m so used to Rogers needlessly trying to make mobile life (especially billing) more difficult and complicated, that frankly, seeing this My Account application is as much of a shock as seeing my earphones magically untangle themselves after taking them out of their storage pouch. I thought this relationship was supposed to stay crappy and complicated forever…could they be proving me wrong?

For Rogers iPhone customers, you can pick up the app right HERE. As for everyone else… well, don’t bother 😛
