You forgot perhaps the best feature of jailbreaking: iPhoneVM, which allows you to increase you RAM drastically. For example, my 2g itouch currently has 90mb RAM. No need to go buy a new 3GS!

In reply to joetomasone. Yeah - But I neglected to mention I had uninstalled the blackra1n app after my first jailbreak. Now if I try to jailbreak again, it doesn't reboot probably since it is already jailbroken.

I’d throw in xGPS as a killer Jailbreak app as well. Voice turn-by-turn navigation for free, long before it was allowed in the normal App Store for gobs of money. Great app!

In reply to bghuna. Yes. Go run the Blackra1n app on your iPhone (should be an icon on your Springboard), and choose sn0w from the menu; and you will then see an install button.

I'm getting ready to go on a trip…and fear limited internet access. So I decide to try to use blacksn0w to unlock and enable tethering. I try to use blackra1n again (I already jailbroke a few months ago, but there was no sn0w). Now I can't seem to find it in Cydia. Even checked here: http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/2009/11/03/blac… and the last post on 11/14 says the same thing. Ideas?

Just wanted to add my observations here: I just bought a brand new 3GS and immediately jailbroke it using blackra1n, and do not experience any "tethered jailbreak" effect. i"ve rebooted it many times and each time it comes up just fine, jailbreak intact. Maybe I've gotten lucky! 😀

I'm thinking about trying out Snappy, but I didn't include it (or SnapTap, or others that I either have tried or am considering) simply because they are not the kind of apps that compel me to jailbreak. One I just got pointed to today, however, is: Rotation Inhibitor, an SBSettings plug in that allows you to enable/disable rotation at will. I could kiss the author for writing it! I've added it to the article.

Nope. According to the latest entry on his blog announcing the current version (RC3):

"If your ipt2/3GS/ipt3 is rebooting into recovery after running blackra1n, this isn't a bug. It's a feature. You need to run blackra1n every time to boot it. This 'feature', called tethered jailbreak, is enabled by upgrades Apple made to the bootrom and the fact ipt3 uses nand flash."

I guess I'm out of the loop, I thought the tethered jailbreak was only for the latest iPods, not the latest iPhones? I know there was a problem with the latest 3Gs' but I thought Geohot cleared that up in RC3 of Blackra1n?

Very good post with plenty of well thought reasons to jailbreak. I’d also add SnapTap, for taking photos using the volume button fo shutter release, and Snappy, for rapidly opening the camera app from within any app or even the lock screen.
