2Do for iPhone updated to 1.1: more task options, even better UI, a new icon, and more!

2Do 1.1

I’m really liking the updates this December! First SoundHound 3.0, and now 2Do 1.1? It’s almost too much. Almost.
Patrick reviewed the first version of the app, but it’s improved a fair amount since then and the developers seem to be quite aggressive about adding features and refining the app (they’ve got a neat little roadmap HERE). It’s not all gravy, though. The syncing inconsistencies of 1.0 seem to continue into 1.1, and there are still a few minor quirks concerning task creation…but overall, I still consider 2Do to be my favourite task manager on the iPhone.

Better Syncing, Sort of
2Do 1.0 had some syncing problems here and there, and if you lost your wi-fi connection for whatever reason while within the app, you’d have to quit it to get syncing back. The same problems seem to apply to 1.1, unfortunately, although syncing with iCal is now faster.

Another little quirk concerns the “sync at startup” option: whenever you load the app up while on wi-fi, the app will instantly switch to the Sync tab and try to sync. I find this a little distracting, as it means I’ve always got to switch back to the ToDos tab to get anything done. I’d prefer the background syncing animations that ToDo or RTM employed, or something similar to the cool green sync bar at the top of the Evernote app.

Much cleaner interface and better task management
The great thing about 2Do is how easy it is to add tasks and switch calendars (categories), and it’s only gotten better in 1.1. You can add actions to individual tasks (call, email, google search?!) and even get them to repeat.
The top bar is cleaner, and they’ve moved the “add calendar” button as a dimmed icon beside all of the calendar names. Calendars can now be hidden, so that event calendars (read: contains no tasks) from iCal need not clutter up your view of 2Do.

Focus Filters
Focus filters are a new and welcome addition to 2Do 1.1, and they can apply to most any calendar you want them to. These filters act as a blacklist for any tasks that don’t match certain criteria (specified in the Settings tab), and they’re a great way to make each calendar much more manageable.

Task creation changes
The Quick Add button is now on the top bar, which means there are fewer tabs in the app now. With the exception of the “Today” calendar, tapping on the “quick add” button will bring you to the new task dialogue with the name field selected and the keyboard opened. I’m not sure why “Today” doesn’t work this way, but I’m guessing it’s just a bug. Another small change is the

App Badge
The pesky app badge is a lot more useful now that you can specify the time period it should act as a counter for (i.e. today, next 3 days, next month, etc.).

Landscape View
You can now tilt 2Do into landscape mode and enjoy a gorgeous day-by-day overview of your whole month. You can’t edit anything in this mode, though.

Locking calendars
I honestly forget if this was in 1.0 or not because I have no need to lock my calendars down, but you can now do so if you want to. You can lock each calendar individually, or use a global password for everything.

New App Icon
I don’t really get to enjoy this change since I’m using the Illiumine Winterboard theme, but there you have it.

I haven’t covered absolutely everything in 1.1, but if you want a full list of changes it’s right here.

2Do is available on the App Store for $5.99. The Lite version should be coming soon.
