The New York Times is reporting that Apple is buying Lala, a startup company that allows users to stream music they own, from the web. The reason given for buying the company is a talent acquisition.
In the most recent sign that Apple is looking at alternative ways for people to store and play their digital music, the company has agreed to buy Lala, a four-year-old start-up based in Palo Alto, Calif., a person with knowledge of the deal said Friday.
With this development, Apple may be planning on setting up their version of this service in iTunes. Just such a service would eliminate the need for downloading or syncing your music amongst your machines and devices. Can I get an Amen for that?
Also worth noting, is that Google recently struck a deal to let searchers sample music, for free, from Lala. Guess that won’t continue.
This is purely speculation on my part, but I could see Apple selling you the song in iTunes, then giving you the option of downloading the song so you can have a copy, and then storing a copy on their servers so you can stream it from anywhere. Very cool
