[EDIT: turns out there actually was a screen protector on the fake iPhone. I had tried to take it off on multiple occasions with my nail, but apparently those were all multiple failures. Who’s the dummy now? 4th pic in gallery is updated to show the *real* fake screen]
Engadget might call this thing a KIRF (keepin’ it real fake), but I call it a minimalist device — all of the plastic of an iphone, but without any of the hassle of any electronic parts. If you’re tired of running out of battery, being gouged by your carrier’s smartphone plans, or just have no use for working electronic devices, then this might be the perfect iPhone model for you. iPhoneDummy.net sent me a free one to take a look at, and I’ve got a few more details (err) and pictures (yay!) after the jump.
Instead of spending millions of dollars to design the perfect smartphone like Apple is trying to do, the folks over at iPhoneDummy.net have just taken a mould of Apple’s flagship mobile device and started selling a plastic dummy version.
It isn’t exactly the same size as a real iPhone, though, and the screen is a dead giveaway because the strange bubbles under mine which make it appear as if there’s a badly applied screen protector (although that’s realistic, considering my track record). You can press all of the major buttons, but the earphone jack and dock connector aren’t standard size, and the ringer switch won’t be budging any time soon. That’s alright, though. If you want the dummy to vibrate, you can just shake it and pretend. Don’t be lazy.
I’ve done a lot of very, very stupid things with the dummy iPhone. My friends and family all know how careful I am with my tech, and it’s been a wicked pleasure to throw this dummy around like a rag doll and see people’s horrified reactions. I’m not saying the dummy is invincible, but you can certainly have a lot more fun throwing it around with the knowledge that it’s just a block of nothing, and not a $200 subsidized smartphone.
If you’d like to pick up your own fake iPhone, they’re available for $20 with free shipping over at iPhoneDummy.net. The dummies are only available in black for now, but they’ll still allow you to blend in convincingly on any form of public transport as long as you keep the screen tilted away from prying eyes. Barring that, the iPhone dummy could make a great holiday present…for people you don’t like very much. 😛
