Here at Just Another iPhone Blog we are often inundated with announcements about (and review requests for) games. Lots of games. Lots of puzzle games, really. Every so often, one stands out from the crowd, and we take the time to recommend it to you. Today is one of those days. You see, I ‘m in love.
I ‘m in love with Words.
I ‘m in love with Words With Friends.
Most of us are busy with work, school, family, and the other necessities of our daily lives. Like most people, I find a few minutes of solitude here and there “ but never really enough to sit down and play a game of, say, Twenty Four or Lasers. However, I was recently clued in to Words With Friends “ a great game with a name that unfortunately did not grab my eye when I first saw mention of it some time ago. This is a game that can just as easily fill two minutes of time as it can two hours.
Words With Friends is an online/offline version of Scrabble that allows you to play single or multiple games at your own pace “ with hours between moves, if necessary “ with friends (as the name implies) or random players (friends you haven ‘t met yet?).
As I write this, I have 14 games running that have been active anywhere from 1 minute to several hours ago. When a player makes a move in a game you are playing, you are notified (either in the app or via push notification, if desired) that it ‘s your turn. Play “ or don ‘t “ as your schedule permits. Brilliant! There is also an option for an offline game in which you hand your iPhone or iPod back and forth between turns; again, you need not complete the game in a single sitting; it can be resumed at will.
The game itself is quite well done, with excellent presentation and animations. Like Scrabble, on each turn you can choose to play your tiles, exchange tiles for new ones, or elect to skip your turn. There is also a chat feature for in-game banter.
So far, I ‘ve only found one minor thing to quibble about (quibble “ remember that word “ it ‘s worth decent points!). The dictionary, used to validate your chosen words, is reminiscent of the App Store approval process in which some words are not accepted (such as ‘Ra ‘, the Egyptian Sun God) while patently non-words such as ‘qi ‘ are.
Overall, Words With Friends is a great game that can take up as little (or as much) time as you like and still be very enjoyable.
Words With Friends is available in the App Store as an ad-sponsored free app and as an ad-free paid app ($2.99).
