Actually, I would have expected them to say things more along the lines of, "Apple makes great products; we'll see if their offering has what it takes to compete with ours" as opposed to "It will never get more than x% market share" or "There's no way that Apple can make this work".

It's one thing to say that you believe in your product, another to lay down bold predictions based on something you know really nothing about. The broader issue is that if your CEO was THAT clueless, what does that bode for YOUR company? And let's not forget, in Microsoft's case, their latest quotes were in October 2008 and February 2009 — not June 2007. That Palm investor made his "no one will use an iPhone when their contract expires" comment in March 2009 — after the 3G was already out and after many rumors (several true) were circulating about what was in the 3GS.

To paraphrase Top Gun:

"Ballmer, your ego's writing checks that your product can't cash.."

Maybe a little too fixed on quotes from Microsoft. Truth be told, before the iphone launched NO ONE knew what to expect or how amazing and game changing the device would be. There is simply nothing in the same dimension as useful as the iphone currently.

I have an iPhone myself, just because it does what I do well.
However, to all the ones laughing at MS CEO and Palm spokes people…what did you expect them to say??

"oh yes, Apple has a wicked product, they will kill us all. Might as well pack up and go home. Sorry investors, there goes the stock price. At least I won't get laughed at in a few years!"

They work for MS and Palm, not good business to concede defeat. The other guys you can laugh at though. CNET, Bloggers, Journalists.

Just goes to show you that there is a lot of people out there who just don't like apple. I'm loyal to good technology, not a brand. Iphone > than all other phones right now. If that ever changes, I'll happily switch.

Four in my family bought original iPhone in 2007. I envied them for solid year until my Palm died abruptly in the middle of texting. it was unbelievably hard to get music on it. Two have upgraded to 3GS. I bought iPhone one year later, then upgraded to 3GS this year. Two of family got the $99 iPhones (older models, but with 3G). That would be seven us still loving our iPhones, still using them. No question the aps make it better, but they they would. Husband got a blackberry for work. Two months ago. Hasn't activated it yet, because the iPhone is easier. So all seven of us have iPhones and love them.

It's been a hoot to read about the demise of the iPhone by all the so-called prophets. Add my thanks for the laughs. 🙂

iPhone sucked in 2007. It had no apps, no 3g, no gps. It was nothing but a fancy overpriced phone.
