I was going to invite people to join the JAiB Mile High Club, but then I remembered that means something else. No, what I’m talking about here are our upcoming reviews of HAWX ($7) and Ace Combat XI ($8) on the iPhone. Neither of them are flight sims, but both of them have console counterparts that are pretty big hits. HAWX is one of those Tom Clancy titles where everything looks really polished and hi-tech, and Ace Combat has always been one of those series that makes you feel like Snoopy does as he sits up on his doghouse fighting the Red Baron — a real ace pilot who is feared by everyone else in the sky.
I’m pretty impressed with the general feel of accelerometer-based piloting, but I’ll take a chance now and say that one game is clearly better than the other. I played and finished one game in about 50 minutes and was still piloting like a guy tumbling inside a barrel going down Niagara Falls, whereas I played the other title for about 10 minutes and was already piloting well enough to score easy kills. The reviews should be out within a few days, but here’s my mini conclusion for now: HAWX is the flying game you’re going to want to save your money for.
