The Wall Street Journal (subscription needed to view the article) is reporting that Apple is looking to “overhaul of the way it sells and stores music” and ultimately extending the service to the web. People “familiar with the matter” claim Apple could possibly use Lala’s newly acquired technologies.
As previously reported, Lala’s service allows users to scan their hard disks, match the their library, and in then stream the music from any web browser, anywhere. If Apple were to set up a similar service, it would presumably work the same way. This in contrast to the current method where content is downloaded and store on the consumer’s computers and devices.
This would go against many of the things Apple has claimed in the past, such, customers desire to own their music. Licensing and rights issues would also be a factor.
Personally, I can see Apple adding this service in addition to downloading and owning your music from the current manifestation of the iTunes Store.
