OT: Notify 2 is out for Mac – Still Free, $10 Pro version available

Notify 2

It came out a few days ago, but I’ve only really spent this morning checking out the second version of this elegant email notifer for Mac OSX. Notify 2 sports an updated UI, IMAP support for your Gmail account, and Growl notifications to tell you when you receive a new message. However, there’s now a $10 Pro version that offers full HTML previews of your messages, support for more e-mail accounts (Google Apps, Rackspace, “generic IMAP accounts”, and MobileMe) as well as the ability to reply from right within the app. The Pro version is essentially a super light e-mail client, and I’m definitely intrigued.

I really love the presentation in Notify 2. The app sits up in the OSX status bar and only comes down when you click on it. Once open, you can use your mouse or keyboard shortcuts to create new messages, reply, read, or delete your messages. Keep in mind, though, that only unread messages in your inbox will show up in Notify 2. The app does support multiple accounts, though. So if you’re not the type to forward all of your accounts to your Gmail (why not?!), Notify 2 could be a real boon.

The one stickler here is the keyboard shortcuts – they’re a little limited right now. I’m so used to calling Firefox up and using only keyboard shortcuts to check my Gmail inbox that I’m not sure the extra click to open Notify 2 is worth adding to my work flow (tee hee, first time I’ve used that term). Still, I’m not complaining about a $10 alternative for checking my mail, and I think this free (or $10) app is definitely worth a look if you’ve got some spare time this weekend.
