Review: Get your feet wet with “Pollywog” for the iPhone

From the first moment of playing Pollywog (which ,according to the Chaotic Box website, is a ‘fast paced 2D physics dodge’m/racer ‘), you ‘ll wonder how something so alarmingly cute could work its way into your brain to push you to play more frequently. The answer is elusive and unknown: just ask how Pac-Man could be such a hit at the arcade and remain so popular even 30 years later?

Pollywog gameplay is nearly as simple as Pac-Man, too. You only have to navigate Pauly the Purple Pollywog through the waters, around lily pads, lotus flowers, bamboo reeds, rocks, etc. to devour your food or ‘Yum Yums. ‘ The more the ‘Yum Yums ‘ and Bonuses the Pollywog consumes, the faster it moves. To complete a level and unlock the next, you must maneuver Pauly within an allotted time limit by tilting the iPhone from side to side and tapping the screen occasionally to push aside the possible floating obstacles without scattering your food.

I remember the days of Pac-Man and practicing over and over to develop a successful pattern of play. Pollywog reminds me of those days. Although I haven ‘t unlocked most of the 19 levels, I have wanted to continue to play and conquer a level (especially when I miss the mark by only 0.33sec!) in an attempt to, as the website states, ‘achieve that elusive ‘Perfect ‘ run! ‘ When a game teases you to return to improve and play more, I believe it has ‘hit the mark ‘ for fun game play! My 6-year old son must also agree, since he has been trying to best my time on each level!

The graphics are smooth, accurate, easy on the eyes, and enjoyable. The music and sound effects are light and fun; the controls are easy; and best of all “ they are adjustable in the Options menu! Just as Namco “ the creators of classic Pac-Man “ the creators at Chaotic Box should be proud of a simple, pleasant, and yet increasingly challenging game.

At the time of this writing, Pollywog is available for $1.99 at the App Store.
