Digital Daily is reporting on the widespread screen flickering problems affecting the 27-inch iMacs, and the recent slippage in shipping timeframe, which is now two weeks for orders on Apple’s online store. This report falls in line with earlier reports of 27-inch iMacs arriving with broken screens.
As I write this, there are 82 pages of complaints about the machine on Apple’s support site, all from customers who claim the display of their 27-inch iMac flickers or otherwise distorts sporadically (see video below).
Apple hasn’t directly stated weather the shipping delay is due to the screen problems or simply high demand. Draw your own conclusion.
Reached for comment, Apple offered little in the way of explanation: “The new iMac has been a huge hit and we are working hard to fulfill orders as quickly as possible,” a company spokesperson told me. “We apologize for any inconvenience or delay in delivery this may cause our customers.” He did not address issues with the machine’s display or reports that they might be responsible for the 2 week shipping delay.
It seems the 27-inch iMacs have been dogged with problems from the start. Shortly after the machines started to ship, it was found that they had trouble processing flash data. This problem was later addressed in the Mac OS X 10.6.2 update.
