iPhone Surpasses Windows Mobile in the U.S.

FierceDeveloper (via MacRumors) is reporting on data comScore, a research firm, that shows that the iPhone has passed up Windows Mobile in smartphone market share in the U.S. This data is based on monthy user surveys averaged out over each quarter, so these numbers represent devices in use, and not devices sold.

The data shows 36 million Americans use a smartphone, with 196 million people using non-smartphone devices. Approximately 15 million of the 36 million smartphone owners use a Blackberry. That boils down to 40% of the smartphone market. The iPhone now holds 25%. Windows Mobile holds a 20% share.

If you notice, Microsoft had a nearly ten year head-start over Apple. The iPhone has only been out for 2.5 years and has already surpassed Windows Mobile. Microsoft has recently rebranded Windows Mobile as “Windows Phone.” Microsoft’s sales number are tanking in the mobile arena, and nobody cares.
