BusinessWeek is reporting that Verizon claims they would be ready for the iPhone if Apple and Verizon would strike deal bringing the iPhone to their network.
Verizon Wireless has even made upgrades that would make its network more capable of handling extra traffic that would be generated by the iPhone, Verizon Wireless Chief Technology Officer Anthony Melone says in an interview.
“We have put things in place already,” Melone tells Bloomberg BusinessWeek. “We are prepared to support that traffic.”
The report goes on to say that the iPhone has put an incredible amount of stress on AT&T’s network since the devices launch. In fact the report says the data traffic is up 5000% over the last few years. So, the question becomes, “Could any other mobile provider handle the traffic?” That said, Verizon still feels confident they could handle the strain.
I still suspect Apple won’t go with Verizon because of the different kind of network signal Verizon transmits. It would require an iPhone created exclusively for Verizon. I think, although their network is much smaller, T-Mobile is a much more likely candidate for the iPhone, because AT&T and T-Mobile share the same signal type. Meaning Apple wouldn’t need to create a new phone to strike a deal.
