Well, it looks like Rogers iPhone customers with data plans consisting of at least 1GB will be tethering for free until May of 2010 — that’s five months more of free tethering, which was previously set to end on December 31, 2009. There doesn’t seem to be an official reason for the extension, although it’s very likely because of all the pressure from the new iPhone carriers in town. Bell and Telus offer free tethering, and there’s also a startup carrier, Wind Mobile, which seems to be offering unlimited data for $35 (details are still a little vague, but that’s how I read it on their website).
This means that Rogers really has to offer something compelling for people to stay on. Frankly, I’m still waiting for the compelling part. The free tethering bit is just reasonable. If people already have data caps (6GB is our biggest plan in Canada) then why should we pay extra for tethering? The most we could ever use without paying buttloads of cash is 6 GB.
