What better place to start these than with iPhone apps, our favorite subject to cover.  2009 was a memorable year for iPhone apps “ tens of thousands of apps added, and not all of them horrible ‘spam apps ‘.  Although there was certainly plenty of ‘junk ‘ added to the App Store, there was also plenty of great stuff as well.  Hit the jump to see some of our favorites

http://isource.com/iphone-software/boxcar-app-review

Boxcar does what it ‘s designed to do, very well in fact. It pushes all my DMs and mentions to my iPhone, and when I view the notification message, it launches Twitterrific. That ‘s all I ‘ve been asking for. And Boxcar delivered And quit launching Tweetie or Twitterrific every 5 minutes to see if you have any new DMs or mentions. I loved every spelling second with Lexic, and that ‘s really because the Kieffer Bros. have treated it as a labour of love. Lexic is a beautifully polished and balanced gameplay experience, and I think it ‘s much more than just a fantastic casual game, but a triumphant example of what premium iPhone apps can be ( ‘Word! ‘).

Canabalt is instantly gripping:

The music pulsates and the man starts to pick up the pace. He clears the next three rooftops in half the time it took him to run the first and this is when the music and the world simply explode into action. Buildings rumble and collapse, airships scream as they fly overhead, and I realize that after a mere 20 seconds of gameplay: Canabalt already has me hooked.

Roll on 2010

As much fun as 2009 was for iPhone app junkies, I think 2010 will likely be an even more exciting one in the iPhone apps arena.  I hope next year we ‘ll see Apple continue to gradually loosen the restrictions on what is allowed in the App Store, and make major improvements to App Store policies and the review process.  I also expect we ‘ll continue to see great jailbreak developers push forward the boundaries of what ‘s possible on the iPhone.

I hope you enjoyed our iPhone apps recap “ and that you ‘ll share some of your favorites in the comments.
